What to Wear
"What do I wear?" most common question I hear from people about their session. Here are some suggestions, but remember: they are just suggestions. Feel free to ignore them all! The best thing to wear is something you are comfortable in and represents you well.
1. Plan in Advance
The last thing you the morning of your session is to still be deciding what you're going to wear, especially if it is a group session. Take some stress away from the day and have an outfit plan.
If your session is for group photos, try laying out the outfits you've chosen together to see if they look good. If they don't, switch out what doesn't work. Trust me - you won't regret planning in advance!
2. Coordinate don't match
This is mainly for group and couple photos. Try to choose colors that coordinate rather than have everyone wearing the exact same outfit. It helps create a more casual vibe for photos and lets everyone stand out on their own rather than blend in. To create your palette, try choosing two main colors and then adding in a few accent colors. Throw in some different textured fabrics or maybe a pattern for additional interest.
3. choose a seasonal color palette
If you need inspiration for your color palette, consider the season! Most of the sessions I do are outdoors. Choosing colors that complement the changing leaves, stand out in wintery landscapes, or bring the summer cheer will make for a more cohesive image with your backdrop.
And while speaking of colors - avoid neons! They often don't turn out in photos and can cast their color on skin tones.
4. Consider the location
Does your outfit make sense with what where you are? Are you planning on wearing green in a leafy green forest? Try to choose colors that will stand out and complement your surroundings.
5. Pick fabrics with movement
Fabrics with movement can create more interesting photos. It brings life and texture into the image without making the photos look too busy. Plus - who doesn't love a good twirling dress?
6. Use a few accessories and Layers
Pretty jewelry, hats, and scarves can add personality to your photos. Choose a few accessories and maybe add a cardigan or jean jacket that you can remove at some point in your session to create even more variety in your final gallery.
7. Limit distracting patterns & logos
Avoid brands and distracting patterns on your clothes. They can quickly date your photos and could be diverting attention from you in your photos.
8. Involve the family
If your session involves kids, include them in the decision making! Give them a few options and let them choose. This is an excellent way to get your kids excited for the pictures and make your photos even more authentically you.
9. Keep it comfortable
Wear what makes you feels comfortable and good about yourself so that during the session you can focus on having fun!
10. Be true to you
The best way to get authentic photos is to be true to yourself. Wear something that reflects your sense of style! If it's a new outfit that you won't wear again, it's probably not the right outfit for your photos. Also, don't be afraid to ignore any of my suggestions if you think a different choice will be best for you. It's all about being true to who you are!
